The Science Behind the Sense:
Exploring Cognitive Neuroscience in Decision Making
May 3-6, 2012
with faculty from Duke University
The Master Mediator Institute invites you to take part in an Immersion Course on cognitive neuroscience and decision making with faculty from Duke University in Durham, NC.
Mediators have “Mediator Sense” a term we have coined to describe an evolving blend of experience, intuition, empathy, compassion, risk analysis skills and many other skill sets relating to human behavior. We use Mediator Sense to help make process and substantive decisions as we help facilitate decision making with people involved in conflict, making decisions in complex transactions or under risky or uncertain decisions. The Master Mediator Institute (MMI) was created to make connections with leading scientists, academics and researchers and to create a transdisciplinary approach to further understandings about human behavior and decision making in the context of negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution. MMI Immersion Courses are designed to help understand the science behind Mediator Sense. How does the brain work? How do we make decisions? How can we better understand how we are wired to make fast, unconscious decisions and what cognitive biases interfere with good decision making? What do we know about the human tendency to act irrationally? What new research in the science of decision making can we apply to prevent or resolve conflict? Scientists can now see into the brain and gain insights about how we make decisions. What can we learn from neuroscientists, psychologists, economists, physicians and other disciplines that will make us more insightful, better at assisting in resolving conflicts, more adept at transforming relationships and facilitating decision making?
The Science Behind the Sense: Exploring Cognitive Neuroscience in Decision Making presented with faculty from Duke University is a chance to connect with leading scientists, researchers and academics as well as nationally and internationally respected mediators, advocates and executives in a small group setting. The course is designed for anyone who is intellectually curious about the mind and the brain and wants to further their understanding about neuroscience, emotion, memory, human behavior and decision making. Colleagues attending include mediators, facilitators, ombudsmen, consultants, advocates, authors and professors. Registration is limited to 36 people to allow for an intimate and collegial learning experience. In the work that the Master Mediator Institute has undertaken, there is a challenging opportunity to make connections with scientists, academics, researchers and other professionals and to bridge the gap between work in the lab and conflict resolution and decision making. Our integrating theory with practice sessions have been added to allow for discussion and shared experience between some of the top professionals in the mediation, legal and conflict resolution community.
